Women's Health Q&A

What is women’s health?

Many aspects of women’s health revolve around reproductive health. However, women also face higher rates of heart disease, bone health issues, depression, osteoarthritis, and certain autoimmune disorders. True women’s health care encompasses screening and patient education for all these health matters.

As you move through the phases of life, your health needs will shift and change. Adolescents have a different set of needs than women preparing for pregnancy and childbirth, but also women experience a whole new set of needs as they transition out of their reproductive years.

What should I expect during a well woman visit?

Well woman visits are the setting where you’ll receive many of your women’s health services. These visits are an opportunity to get the screenings needed for your age and overall health condition.

A pelvic exam gives your practitioner the chance to visually assess your vaginal and cervical tissues for signs of disease. Pap smear testing is performed during pelvic exams and is a powerful tool in detecting cervical cancer in the earliest possible stages. However, you won’t need a Pap smear during every visit.

A professional breast exam checks for signs of tissue abnormalities. You’ll also learn how to screen for breast changes on your own.

Your well woman exam centers on your unique health needs, so feel free to ask about any aspect of women’s health.

What topics can I discuss during women’s health appointments?

The best way to get the most out of your well woman exams is to think about what you’d like to accomplish from your visit. Create a list of questions before your appointment. Some of the topics you might talk about during your visit include:

  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Birth control
  • Fertility care
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Sexual health
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Sexually transmitted disease screening, prevention, or treatment

There is nothing off-limits during your well woman exams. Your practitioner is here to help and is trained in all aspects of women’s health and wellness.
